Physician Emmett Miller, M.D., was one of the first practitioners of modern mind-body medicine, called "psycho-physiological medicine." His work in this area, which began in the early '70s at the Esalen Institute in California, involved the synthesis of medical hypnosis, meditation and trance states, music, and spiritual insight. He then developed the now familiar form of relaxation and guided imagery; top New Age musicians such as Georgia Kelly and Raphael contributed background music to accompany some of her guided imagery narration.
Dr Miller has broadened his endeavors to address high-level wellness, peak performance strategies, and the application of these healing and behavior change in families, groups and organizations. In addition to his numerous books, he gained national and international prominence as a co-convener of the California Task Force on Self-Esteem, which demonstrated clearly the profound effect of self-esteem (or the lack thereof) on success, social adaptation, scholastic performance, drug and alcohol abuse and violence.
A graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Miller lectures at numerous universities and medical schools, and has appeared on numerous national TV shows, including Sally Jessy Raphael, Regis and Kathie Lee, and 20/20. His tapes are widely used in hospitals, recommended by health professionals, and used to achieve peak performance by business people, performers and athletes, including the U.S. Olympic team. During the 1990s, his explorations have been focused more on depth psychology and the spiritual dimension of human life
Dr. Miller practices mind-body medicine in the San Francisco Bay area and in the Sierra foothills. He conducts trainings for health professionals and lay audiences, and lectures throughout the country and abroad.
